
26.2 percent of Americans, about one in four adults, suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. David Harrington is one of them. Diagnosed with depression, and bipolar disorder since the age of 12, he is trying to live a normal life. David sits outs of The Gathering Place and smokes a cigarette. The Gathering Place is a community of people who congregate together that have mental illnesses. His fingers are stained from the cigarette buds that he picks up to smoke everyday. Either from the ashtrays on top of trashcans, or on the side of the road if the bud is smoke able David finds it. “I don’t have any money to buy them, or if I did I would.” He explains.
